Electrical Engineer — Protection & Controls, Microgrid & BTM
About the Role
We are looking for a seasoned Protection & Controls engineer to lead the design of microgrid and behind-the-meter (BTM) control and protection systems. You will architect the schemes that keep islanded and grid-connected plants stable and safe, from controller logic through interconnection protection. This role suits an engineer who thrives at the intersection of protection philosophy, real-time control, and industrial communications — and who wants ownership of the whole scheme rather than a narrow slice of it.
What You'll Do
- Design plant-level microgrid controller architecture, including islanding detection and resynchronization schemes.
- Perform governor and AVR tuning for stable islanded and grid-parallel operation.
- Develop behind-the-meter interconnection protection compliant with IEEE 1547 and author functional design specifications (FDS).
- Implement control logic in IEC 61131-3 and integrate devices over DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850.
- Program and commission SEL RTAC controllers and coordinate protection across the plant.
What We're Looking For
- BSEE.
- 8–10 years of protection & controls experience in microgrid and/or BTM systems.
- Plant-level microgrid controller design experience.
- Islanding and resynchronization scheme design.
- Governor and AVR tuning experience.
- BTM interconnection protection under IEEE 1547 and FDS authoring.
- IEC 61131-3 control logic; DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850 communications.
Nice to Have
- SEL RTAC programming experience (significant plus).
- Experience commissioning microgrid or BTM plants in the field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
